Home Repairs and Upgrades

Many residents need roof or electrical repairs to install solar on their homes. The Home Repairs and Upgrades initiative connects residents with available funding opportunities to make homes solar-ready.

HOW IT WORKS

1

Confirm you qualify for the Home Repairs and Upgrades initiative. You must be eligible to participate in the Residential Solar sub-program, and your home requires repairs or upgrades for solar readiness.

2

Explore our list of available funding opportunities from external home repair programs.

3

Once an external funding opportunity is identified, the ILSFA team can help you with your application. After the repairs are complete, you can contact your ILSFA Approved Vendor to start the solar installation process.

4

If you cannot find an external funding opportunity, the ILSFA team may connect you with an Approved Vendor offering home repairs and upgrades. If you qualify, the Approved Vendor can assess your home, complete the repairs, and plan your solar installation.

Who Can Participate in the Home Repairs and Upgrades Initiative?

  • You qualify for the Illinois Solar for All: Residential Solar sub-program as a single-family homeowner or small (1-4 unit) multifamily building owner, and if your home is owner-occupied.

Frequently Asked Questions – Home Repairs and Upgrades

Costs associated with home repairs and upgrades vary depending on coverage through external funding opportunities. The ILSFA program can help you explore and apply for available external funding opportunities to offset or cover the costs of the necessary repairs and upgrades for solar readiness. These may include grants, low-interest or forgivable loans, assistance programs from your city or municipality, state-wide or government programs, and home repair programs from nonprofit organizations.

While we encourage exploring external funding opportunities first, we know many options may not apply to your unique situation. If a good-faith attempt is made and all external funding options have been exhausted, the Home Repairs and Upgrades initiative may be able to cover the cost of home repairs and upgrades through incentives offered to Approved Vendors.

Home repairs and upgrades covered by external funding sources will vary depending on the guidelines for each funding source.

Participants who are eligible to receive home repairs and upgrades through incentives offered to ILSFA Approved Vendors may be able to receive the following repairs:

  • Main Service Panel Replacement or Upgrade
  • Meter and Riser Replacement or Upgrade
  • Main Service Panel Grounding
  • Water Grounding (100/200 amps)
  • Solar-related Roof Work
  • Full Roof Replacement
  • Sister Rafters
  • Associated fees, permitting fees

Residential Solar participants will have no upfront costs for authorized repairs and upgrades covered under the Home Repairs and Upgrades initiative. If your home repair needs are outside the items listed above, the ILSFA team can assist you in finding outside funding.

Yes, all home repairs and upgrades covered in coordination with an Approved Vendor in the initiative must be completed with the goal of solar readiness and installation.

If external funding is covering your home repairs and upgrades, you will work within that program to complete them.

If you receive upgrades through an Approved Vendor, they will conduct the repairs alongside licensed, certified, bonded, and insured electricians and contractors.
